233 Years of Independence…”powers from the consent of the governed.”

I can’t read our Declaration of Independence without tearing up. And on every Independence Day, I freely shed thankful tears for living in a land where we acknowledge our God and being endowed by our Creator with Freedom and Liberty, and for living in the greatest Nation ever conceived, nurtured and protected by God fearing free men.

I’ve walked the halls of our U.S. Capitol, the hallowed Senate and House Chambers and beyond. I’ve been to the White House. I’ve spent some time in almost all 50 states, and I’ve traveled some internationally; and it is those experiences that convince me that this Democratically governed Republic is a miracle. No other people in the history of mankind has ever enjoyed the freedom and liberty we do today. It’s up to us to ensure that the spirit and intent of our Founding Fathers remain the core of our government and this Christian Nation.

On this Independence day, it seems to me that we dearly miss the heartbeats of the fathers and sons, the mothers and daughters lost in the defense of our freedom. Our pledge today should be that their mortal sacrifices were not made in vein.

You know, following the Declaration of our Independence, the Preamble to the Constitution spells out just what our government is for:…”to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity,…”

My prayer is that as a nation of free people we remember where we came from, how hard it was to get here, and how precious our liberty is. Let us never forget our obligation to honor the better men and women who have defended and secured our freedom thusfar, and our obligation to our children and grand children to pass on this miracle of freedom and independence.
