Mayoral Election Creates Unexpected Costs and Unforseen Concerns
The abrupt resignation of San Angelo’s former Mayor, back in May, has created some headaches for San Angelo residents, city council members, and especially the Tom Green County Elections Administrator and her staff. The San Angelo City budget for this year did not include funding for a Mayoral election this November which has forced the City and the Elections Office to scramble to find ways to reduce the cost of the election.
Governor Palin & the fractured GOP
I was there when Sarah Palin was introduced to the world at the Republican National Convention in Minnesota last September. I remember telling reporters leading up to the convention that Governor Palin, as John McCain’s choice for Vice President, was just what the party needed; she was an exciting, energetic conservative, pro-life, pro-family, pro-military governor from a western state. The response from grassroots Republicans was phenomenal; most Republicans loved her as the VP choice.
Since the election, Gov. Palin and her family have been the focus of attacks from the media, late night talk show hosts, and left leaning liberals from across the country.
I don’t know why she resigned; but I believe she still has a major part to play in GOP politics.
It seems to me that Palin is a much better person than South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford or any of the other high profile Republicans who have damaged the party through their own weaknesses.
Either way, it is time for grass roots Conservatives to decide who they want to lead the GOP through the 2010 election cycle and beyond. As a party, we must find a clear leader, a clear message, and a clear strategy to take back Austin and Washington in 2010 and again in 2012.
233 Years of Independence…”powers from the consent of the governed.”
I can’t read our Declaration of Independence without tearing up. And on every Independence Day, I freely shed thankful tears for living in a land where we acknowledge our God and being endowed by our Creator with Freedom and Liberty, and for living in the greatest Nation ever conceived, nurtured and protected by God fearing free men.
I’ve walked the halls of our U.S. Capitol, the hallowed Senate and House Chambers and beyond. I’ve been to the White House. I’ve spent some time in almost all 50 states, and I’ve traveled some internationally; and it is those experiences that convince me that this Democratically governed Republic is a miracle. No other people in the history of mankind has ever enjoyed the freedom and liberty we do today. It’s up to us to ensure that the spirit and intent of our Founding Fathers remain the core of our government and this Christian Nation.
On this Independence day, it seems to me that we dearly miss the heartbeats of the fathers and sons, the mothers and daughters lost in the defense of our freedom. Our pledge today should be that their mortal sacrifices were not made in vein.
You know, following the Declaration of our Independence, the Preamble to the Constitution spells out just what our government is for:…”to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity,…”
My prayer is that as a nation of free people we remember where we came from, how hard it was to get here, and how precious our liberty is. Let us never forget our obligation to honor the better men and women who have defended and secured our freedom thusfar, and our obligation to our children and grand children to pass on this miracle of freedom and independence.
Governor Mark Sanford’s Shift from Solution to Problem
By now, the impact of Governor Mark Sanford’s choices are dawning on the Republican Party nationally. One of the handful of GOP stars less that a year ago, Sanford was widely believed to be on the shortlist for John McCain’s choice of Vice President. Less than two weeks ago, he was mentioned as one of the top four or five Republican Governors who could mount a legitimate campaign for President in 2012. No more. Sanford’s series of decisions that landed him in Argentina and in front of the global media have effectively ended his political career, his tenure as governor, and maybe even his marriage.
Senator Arlen Specter: Posterboy for Term Limits
While Senator Specter’s transition to the Democrat Party was no real surprise, his motives for abandoning the GOP typify what’s wrong with Washington. Specter said he couldn’t win in the Republican primary so he switched parties. He’s been in the senate for 36 years and his own words indicate he is more interested in holding on to his senate seat and his seniority than to his principles. That’s exactly why we need term limits; to return to a government OF the people.
Why Members of Congress Need Four-Year Terms
All 435 members of Congress were sworn into office in January. Every member of Congress has to prepare for an election in the March 2010 primary, only 11 months from now. In essence, every member of Congress is campaigning constantly. They don’t have the luxury of U.S. Senators who only have to run for re-election every 6 years or even the President and most Governors who have to run every 4 years. Even most school board members serve at least 3 year terms.
